The pilot action carried out in Liguria, within the framework of the LIFE BE-WoodEN project, focused on the regeneration of the indoor and outdoor spaces of a social housing building located in Imperia and owned by ARTE Imperia, with particular attention to the needs of elderly and vulnerable people.
Coordinated by the Regione Liguria and the University of Genoa in collaboration with ARTE Imperia, this action was developed through a Challenge-Based Learning process and involved interdisciplinary groups in the definition of design proposals, leading to the selection of a winning project aimed at the creation of a multifunctional socio-cultural space.
The methodology integrated urban and social context analysis, residents’ engagement, and dialogue with local stakeholders.
The implementation phase took the form of a self-construction workshop, involving students, volunteers, and experts, resulting in the construction of timber installations and furnishings designed to improve accessibility, usability, and the quality of shared indoor and outdoor spaces.
The pilot action fostered social interaction, intergenerational dialogue, and active use of the spaces, contributing to users’ well-being and environmental quality. It generated significant social, environmental, and educational impacts, strengthening participants' technical skills related to timber processing, promoting low environmental impact solutions, and testing replicable models of social housing regeneration, fully consistent with the values and principles of the New European Bauhaus.
